Here is a study we can run where we already know the correct answer.
We’re going to attach a quantum-random number to each of the twenty emotions you rate in a FeelTrack check-in. Those numbers come from quantum vacuum noise, generated the moment after you submit. They are not derived from your ratings, your history, your patterns, or anything else about you. There is no information in them about how you feel. None. By construction.
Then we’re going to show them to you, and occasionally ask a single question: does this feel connected to how you’re feeling?
We know what the numbers mean. We don’t know what people will say. That gap is the whole study.
Why this is worth asking
Human beings are extraordinary pattern-detectors. It’s arguably our best trick. We find faces in clouds, intent in coincidence, and narrative in sequences of unrelated events. This isn’t a defect or a failure of intelligence — it’s the same machinery that lets you notice you always feel flat on Sunday evenings, or that a particular person leaves you drained. Pattern-finding is how self-knowledge works at all.
But the machinery doesn’t come with an off switch, and it doesn’t announce when it’s producing a false positive. The same instinct that notices a real emotional pattern will happily manufacture one out of a random number.
Mood tracking sits right on top of this. When an app shows you a chart, you find a story in it. Usually that’s the point. Sometimes the story is in you rather than in the data — and there’s normally no way to tell the difference, because the data isn’t random and you can’t check.
Here, it is random, and we can check.
What we’re actually testing
Three things, in plain terms:
Do people report a connection to a number that has none? If a meaningful fraction say yes, that’s a measurable, quantified estimate of pattern-projection in exactly the context where it matters — someone reflecting on their own emotional state.
Does the number itself change the answer? Do high values feel more resonant when someone is feeling good? That would be anchoring — the shown value nudging the interpretation of a feeling that was already there.
Does thinking time matter? We’ll record how long the answer takes. A reflexive “yes” and a considered “yes” are not the same signal, and we’d like to know whether deliberation makes people more accurate or just more confident.
What we are not claiming
There’s a long tradition of research — Princeton’s PEAR lab, the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and the work behind apps like Entangled — asking whether human consciousness can influence the output of a quantum random generator. It’s a genuinely interesting question and we wrote about it with respect.
It is not the question we’re asking, and our design deliberately can’t answer it. The quantum values in FeelTrack are generated after you’ve already recorded how you feel. Your rating is fixed before any photon is measured. Whatever that arrangement can test, it isn’t mind-over-matter, and we’d rather say so plainly than let the word “quantum” imply something we haven’t earned.
We’re not going to show you a number and hint that the universe is responding to your mood. The number is noise. That’s the point of it.
Why bother, then?
Because knowing you project meaning onto noise is useful, and almost nobody gets to see it demonstrated with their own data.
When you’ve collected enough check-ins, we’ll show you your own results: how often you felt a connection, alongside the fact that there was nothing there to connect to. Not as a gotcha — as a genuinely interesting fact about how your mind works, in the specific place where that matters most. If you can notice yourself finding a pattern in a number that provably has none, you’re better equipped to ask the same question about the patterns you find in everything else.
That skill has a name in therapy — it’s close to what cognitive behavioural work calls examining the evidence. We think a quantum random number is an unusually clean way to practise it.
When, and how to skip it
This isn’t live yet. The groundwork is built and deployed; the visible part comes next, and we’ll say so here when it lands.
When it does, it’ll be on by default, with a switch in your settings to turn it off. If you’d rather not see a quantum number next to your emotions, that’s one click, and nothing else about your check-ins changes. The numbers never alter your ratings — they sit alongside them, and every trend, insight and streak you see is computed from what you actually reported.
We’ll publish what we find, including if the answer is boring.
